Discovering Your Highest and Best Self

A Featured Article  from the Pathforward Acadamy Faculty

Have you every had an experience, even if for a few  seconds or minutes, that you feel connected with your best and highest self… that what you are doing in that very moment has you knowing that you were meant to be doing just that thing?

And by doing that thing, you feel whole, purposeful, “in the flow”? And the people around you are better for your knowing?

Christine’s experience:

I can remember a time when I was 5 or 6, playing outside our home on a summer morning in Southern California. In shorts and bare feet, I remember walking along the street and not hopping up and down to avoid the hot ground beneath me.  What stuck with me was that I was, for a few moments anyway, able to control the heat by my belief system.

It was a passing moment, and I was a little kid, but by believing that it was not hot, it gave me a profound sense of accomplishment and awareness of how my thoughts could control my actions.

Experts tell us that most all of us, by the time we reach adolescence, have experienced at least one of these “true connection with self” moments.

In fact, we experience them throughout our lives. And, they happen upon us in so many different ways. For me, they have arrived in different forms, offering different lessons. For a long time, I never knew what to make of all of this.

Amy’s View:

“I think a key to this discovery is when we are able to notice, iterate and replicate our best performance… so that were are continually improving on the efforts that make us real and whole and meant for this.

It might be in the studio during a particular posture, in the office during a particular conversation, with kids over dinner, or alone in contemplation. It might be on the ball field, or in the grocery story, or in front of an audience of thousands. It doesn’t matter the context, but the knowing behind it.”

A bit about our history together:

The year was 2006, and we were both recent graduates of a Business Coaching course through Duke University. We began seeing great leaps in success when applying these principles with our coaching clients.

At Bikram Yoga Lake Norman, and in developing the curriculum for our Pathforward Training Academy, we remain big  belivers of Michael Ray. For students who will be part of our Hot 26+ Teacher Training beginning in the Fall, this book will be required reading.

So, how does it really work? Here are some clues…

These moments of connection come about when our inherited gifts and talents align with our daily lives, and give us a true sense of knowing we are doing the right thing in that moment in time. These are the moments when we discover the one force that gives real meaning to our lives, and speaks to the core of our being. These are the moments that begin to define why we are here, living in this life at this time.

These moments can make us feel connected, motivated and sustained. By actively rehearsing and remembering these moments, life takes on new meaning. When we align our daily activities with this new understanding of self, and letting that inform our decisions, we are able to vastly improve our own lives and the lives of those around us.

What has been your experience?

Can you remember a time or two in the course of your daily life when you felt a deep connection with your highest self? When you felt validated with a sense of complete purpose, joy or compassion?
