I was reflecting the other day about the journey that I have been on for the last sixteen years and realized some of my greatest life lessons how come as a result of my Bikram Yoga practice. Here are the top 10 things that I have learned:
Invest for the long run
When I first started practicing I went out and bought a no name yoga mat at a retail store. I thought yoga mats were are all the same. Even though I was practicing almost daily I didn’t see the value in a good mat. As my practice progressed through the years, I realized that my mat did not dry very well after a hot steamy class, it started to smell, and my knees hurt in several postures. I decided to look around and asked my some of my fellow students about their mats. I still remember a conversation I had with one student who said it was the best investment he had made. He said we spend hours researching the best features for our cars, computers, and homes why shouldn’t we made the same investment in ourselves. It was like a light bulb went off for me. I had really never considered the investment in me with my yoga practice. My yoga practice was something that I was doing to relieve stress and feel better about myself, but I didn’t make the investment connection. My practice and my attitude towards myself shifted as a result of this realization. I decided that I was worth the investment.
