5. Consistency will reward you greatly
When I first started practicing I wasn’t sure how my body was going to react to the practice. I had been struggling from an overuse knee injury and a surgery that didn’t go according to plan. I really struggled in some of the postures, especially fixed firm, but the teachers kept saying “just keep coming back to class everyday and your knees will heal”. For many students like me this concept was hard to comprehend. How could I come back to class everyday if I struggled in the postures and it didn’t feel so good? I guess the beauty of the situation was that I had tried numerous healing methods over the years, 7 years to be exact, and I couldn’t find the right combination. I was at the end of my rope, so I had no choice but to keep coming back to class. I think at some point that I just surrendered to the postures because I had nothing to lose. It is a true statement when I say when I decided to surrender the healing started to begin. As I continued on this healing journey, I wondered if this principle was needed in my life. I would start projects or friendships with gusto but somehow they would seem to fizzle. I realized what was needed was consistency in all areas of my life. It is true, consistency will reward you greatly.
Ok, and “now the rest of the story”. I was first attracted to Bikram Yoga because of the physical nature of the practice. My body craved the need for openness and the release of tension from my high stress life. It was some years later before I really appreciated the peace that this practice has to offer. I now realize that I need this practice as much for mental clarity and peace as I do for the physical practice. I think this shift is fairly apparent as my family now asks me “when” not “if” I am going to practice today.
