4 Simple Steps to Become More Focused

I think this is the first time in last several years that I am really excited about the holidays. Don’t get me wrong. I love the holidays, but the last several years I let the “to do” list of the holidays overtake me to the point that I just lost the spirit of Christmas.

This year is different. The studio is decorated. We have the Christmas tree up at our house. The Christmas cards are ready to be mailed.   I have even planned out my yoga practices. This is a huge accomplishment for me. So, what is different this year?

FOCUS.

I had slipped into the habit of letting my life take over my day instead of me taking over my life.   My calendar was getting filled up with all kinds of tasks that needed to be completed yet nothing really important was getting done.   I was stressed and really not enjoying the simple pleasures of life. I knew something had to change.

I decided to implement a new strategy. It seems to be working. Here are the steps that I am using to refocus my efforts:

*          Awareness – define what is important.   If it is important then it will get done. Let go of everything else. If your mental and physical well being are important you will find a way to accomplish activities that promote these benefits.

*          Plan – establish a daily plan around important tasks. For me, it starts with planning my yoga practice. I know that if I maintain a regular practice then I am more productive and more mentality ready to handle life’s challenges.

*          Celebrate – acknowledge the accomplishments of small tasks to provide motivation for bigger challenges.   It’s like locking your knee for the first time in class. You have such a great sense of accomplishment that you want to see what else you can do.

*          Repeat – apply repetition to stay focused. It’s the same theory behind a yoga practice. The benefits come from the repeating the postures over and over again.

If you take care of yourself then you can take care of your love ones and more effectively accomplishment your to do list.
