Bring on the dog days of Summer!

or… “Why would anyone practice Bikram Yoga in the Summer!”…

A student commented the other day, “wow, we are really in the dog days of summer.” Their comment made me wonder about the origin of this phrase. So, I decided to look it up.

As defined by dictonary.com the phrase “dog days” means:

plural noun

  1.  the sultry part of the summer, supposed to occur during the period that Sirius, the Dog Star, rises at the same time as the sun: now often reckoned from July 3 to August 11.
  2. aperiodmarked by lethargy, inactivity, or indolence.

Yep, this is how I feel if I don’t practice regularly.

I remember my fear of practicing Bikram Yoga that first summer. Would I be motivated to go to class? Would I make it through class? What if I forgot my frozen bottle of water? My mind came up every reason why I should not go to class.

I had been practicing Bikram Yoga for 9 months and my knee was starting to heal. I wasn’t ready to give up all the progress so I keep going. I knew there was no turning back!

Guess what I realized after that first summer? It wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be! I had been conditioning my body to the practice and it was just fine. My mind, however, was the obstacle. I had to keep reminding myself of the healing benefits every time I wanted to quit.

It is now 14 years later. Do I still have these thoughts?   I can truthfully say no.

I have completed enough summer/winter cycles to know that my body and my mind feels better by going to class versus skipping class.   I know that I will be more productive, less stressed and less achy if I practice on a regular basis.

As one of my Bikram Instructors told me “the worst class you will every have is the one that you do not show up for”. It’s so true.
