“Does it matter if I show up to class?”
My heart sank as I heard these words from a student. I was actually speechless. How am I going to respond?
My mind wandered.
The starfish story came to me.
While wandering a deserted beach at dawn, I saw a boy in the distance bending and throwing as he walked the endless stretch towards me.
As he came near, I could see that he was throwing starfish, abandoned on the sand by the tide, back into the sea.
When he was close enough I asked him why he was working so hard at this strange task. He said that the sun would dry the starfish and they would die.
I said to him that I thought he was foolish. There were thousands of starfish on miles and miles of beach. One person alone could never make a difference.
He smiled as he picked up the next starfish. Hurling it far into the sea he said, “It makes a difference for this one”.
It does. And it makes a difference for me. And for you.
I have personally experienced the healing benefits of Bikram Yoga. I have heard countless stories from students of how this yoga has changed their lives. They have shared that by practicing Bikram Yoga they have:
- worked through injuries
- reduced stress
- gained mental clarity
- slept without the need for medication
- healed emotional scares
- loss weight
- learned to love themselves
The common thread through all these success stories is practicing Bikram Yoga on a regular basis. It seems so simple yet so difficult. Yes, Bikram Yoga does work if you show up for class!
When I opened the studio, I had three objectives. Provide the best yoga, best instructors, and best state-of-the art facility. I knew if we could accomplish these objectives our students would experience the healing benefits. I have measured our success one student at a time since we opened.
Yes, it does matter if you show up for class!
I want everyone to experience and benefit from this yoga. This is my passion and purpose. I cannot do the yoga for you. I can provide you with the facility, instruction, and emotional support to make it happen.
The staff and I also need you to show up to class so that we can continue to offer the variety of class times, maintain our facility, and keep our instructors employed. Each student makes a difference.
So, the next time someone asks me “does it matter if I show up for class” I am going to immediately answer “yes, because your are worth it”!
